Paso Robles Downtown Walkabout
I attended a walk about
town last week. Our tour guide was Dan Burden. He tours
the country as a consultant on walkable communities.
Dan's theme is that the time for walking through town
(instead of driving) has arrived due to the high cost of
maintaining rounds and parking for the ever growing
number of cars. He pointed at the 30mph sign on Park St.
"A town's speed limit should never be over 20mph in
the downtown area," said Dan. If a pedestrian is
struck by a car, he explained, he has a far better
chance of survival if the speed limit is 20mph than even
25mph. At 30 mph there is a 90% chance that the
pedestrian will die. Paso Robles hired architects to help with the future design of the west side of town over the Salinas River. Dan Burden was invited by the architects to ease the town into thinking about what they want the west side to be in the long run. A plan to make the transition will cost over $1.5 million. Be sure to attend the council meetings to learn more and participate.
